SYNOPSIS
In 1971, a group of citizens in search of a playground for their children
took over the site of an old military barracks in Copenhagen. These were
the humble beginnings of the “Christiania” movement. Nowadays
it is far removed from the hippies and freaks of yesteryears – even
if the spirit struggles for existence for those hailing from Christiania,
one of the cultural hot-spots of Europe post ’68, a symbol of a
generation in search of an alternative, autarchical, passifist, free and
community-focused lifestyle, often wild and zany, militant for the liberalisation
of soft drugs. After many conflicts with national political authorities,
this area where the walls are reminiscent of the military style architecture
of Vauban remains the symbol most consistent with a “free city”
where its inhabitants pursue an ideal of self-management despite controversies,
contradictions, degradation and turbulence. Kaleidoscope depicts, through
interaction with the inhabitants of “Christiania”, the playfulness
and sometimes anarchic spirit that lives on. Directed
