SYNOPSIS

During the establishment of the Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, the La Baraque neighbourhood was earmarked for demolition. A dozen inhabitants refused to leave their houses and opposed the urbanization policy of the city, which planned to completely rebuild the area. Others who also wanted to live in an alternative habitat very soon joined them. And so appeared the first caravans, cabins built of recycled materials (old greenhouses from Overijse, caravans, windows from factory cast-offs, earth, straw, wood), the "bubbles", the greenhouses and a few houses scattered through the greenery. The catchwords are still: self-built, low cost, management of common spaces (gardens, parks, paths) and the concern to preserve the environment by managing waste material (sorting, composting organic waste, processing waste water, dry toilets). Finally, social relationships are constantly nourished: residents get together once a week at the neighbourhood centre and decisions concerning the neighbourhood are taken collectively. Kaleidoscope pops in for a visit...
