SYNOPSIS Kaleidoscope turns bellhop Portrait of the Grand Hotel Europe, the oldest and most prestigious hotel in Russia. The magnificent Italianate building is situated in the centre of the imperial city, which was founded 300 years ago, like an open window on Europe according to the despotic wishes of Emperor Peter the Great, Tsar of all the Russias. Corridors, salons and kitchens buzz with thousands of Saint Petersburg tales. The spirits of Tchaikovsky, Dostoyevsky, Gorky, Shostakovich still wander here... After Lenin and Eisenstein, these days we might just as well come face to face with Jacques Chirac, Bill Clinton, Catherine Deneuve or Paul McCartney. This is history, with or without a capital 'H', and we take a look at a whole era. Today, everything is a feast for the ears... and the eyes!
